Review of 30 Rock Fan Fic
Tasting the Lemon is a fan fiction piece based on the critically acclaimed
If you are a fan of 30 Rock you will know that the relationship between Liz Lemon and Jack Donaghy blossoms over time. It has developed from being an awkward and untrusting employer-employee relationship to a mentor-mentee bond.
The writers have so far kept the relationship strictly platonic; I believe the success of the show is largely based on this 'male camaraderie' they have, their goofball characteristics and the banter between the two main characters.

Nonetheless I was still quite curious to read the author’s take on making their relationship more intimate. Before reading I certainly had my reservations about the writer attempting to change the dynamics of their relationship. To me the thought of Liz and Jack being more than just friends just seem a bit too perverse in my view, I think they are just better suited to have a bromance than a romance.
BUT WITH AN OPEN MIND I PROCEEDED TO READ...........
*Sigh* unfortunately this Fan Fic was decidely average, the author effectively subjects the reader to what can only be described as semi erotic literature which was just too crude and crass for my liking.
I appreciate that fan fiction allows the author to let his/her imagination run wild but the Author must also have good understanding of their potential readers. Fans of 30 Rock will certainly be more inclined to read on if the author made a better effort emulating the dialogue and rapport we have come to expect from the two characters. I was hoping there would be one hilarious gaffe after another as they try to take their relationship to the next level but it never happened.
I certainly have suggestion on how the author could have made the Fan Fic better.
1) At the beginning perhaps give the reader a recap on how Jack and Liz got to this situation because Jack has been less than complimentary towards Liz Lemon's physical attributes.
" Lemon if you wer any other woman on earth I would be turned on right now" Jack to Liz (Seinfeldvision)
" Woman at your age is more likely to get mauled at a zoo than get married" Jack to Liz (Jack-tor)
2) I would show the two characters exhibit much more hesitation leading up to their embrace.
3) Before they engage in heated passion something comical should happen, like the two characters accidentally head butting one another as they lean to kiss; or Jack commenting on how Liz's breath smells like Mexican Cheetos and Dunking doughnuts after he kisses her. I could keep going on and on!!
'Tasting the Lemon' is in my opinion is a very poorly crafted piece of Fan Fiction. There is nothing in the piece that would entice 30 Rock fans to continue reading and if you aren't a 30 Rock fan you would think that this is an extract from a very lame romance novel.

Wizard of Oz Fan Fic
I’ve chosen to keep a theme with my fan fiction based on the movie The Wizard of Oz. The Wonderful Wizard of Oz was a movie made in 1939, based on the the book written by L. Frank Baum in 1900. In my fan fiction I also came across references to the Disney sequel Return to Oz which is not as well known about, but a really great (slightly creepy) movie. I chose to read about Oz because it is my favorite movie and I was really interested to see what fan fic had been created about it. If you haven’t seen the movie some of the stories and my synopsis may be a little odd, so you should really see it.
The Wizard of Oz was mainly filmed in Technicolor (although there are periods of sepia and black and white) which meant that the colour of the slippers Dorothy wears were changed from the books colour of silver to ruby for greater results. Carried and Sent is the tale of how the shoes were changed from dull silver to vibrant ruby. Carried accidently falls out of the sleigh and stains her slippers red (and herself) on all of the poppies on the ground. The fan fic creates a reason for the change and relates it back to the movie (with the poppies). It makes the change more exciting the fact it was by an accident rather than just for technological advancements.
The slippers were changed from silver to ruby but why not lime? The Lime Green Slippers explores the life of Ruby’s relative Lime as they are written into the story. For some reason the ruby slippers malfunctioned at the crucial time and Dorothy is left returning to the Wizard to get a replacement pair. This fan fic adds to the end of the movie and changes one of the key points without altering the true outcome too much.
Toto is Dorothy’s trusty sidekick in Toto the True Hero of Oz it tells the tale of how the duo got together in the first place. This fills in the gaps for what happens before the story and expands it in greater detail. It also explains how Toto feels about their fateful meeting and how it changed his little life.
The Wonderful Wizard of Oz takes us to the colourful Munchkin Land in the time of an election for a leader. This was written in the time of the most recent US elections and incorporates current events of that time into the fan fic in a way that relates to the characters of the movie. It was done in a really humorous way and is almost like an article with direct quotes and point of views on the topic by particular characters.
The Wicked Witch in the movie uses the flying monkeys to do all of her nasty bidding, however once she is murdered who was to look after the monkeys? The Witch is Dead the Monkeys are Unemployed explores and expands on this idea. It takes a small minority character in the movie and explores their after movie life. It also moves the monkeys from their environment to New York to face everyday problems that people face.
No Good Deed explores the idea that the Wicked Witch really just sacrificed herself for Dorothy as her actions would mean she was able to leave Oz and return to Kansas. This is an addition to the movie and could be used to explain what happens following the fan fic. The fan fic almost changes the personality of the Wicked Witch to the polar opposite and explores what happens if this was really the case.
The idea of love between Dorothy and the Tin man, Scarecrow and Lion in the movie isn’t developed. However throughout the fan fic there is a great following of the idea that these characters had a romantic link. The next three fan fics are relating to this idea but all in quite different ways.
Wicked Cupid of Oz is a risqué love story of Dorothy’s three (men) helpers having a crack at Dorothy after being shot with cupid’s arrows but the pesky Wicked Witch. This adds to the original movies story line and adds a slightly creepy twist on the characters within the story and humanizes them with feelings and needs despite being a Tin man, Scarecrow and Lion.
The Scarecrow shares his story of his love for Dorothy, in Fire and Tears, and how he feels once she has left Oz. This gives perspectives of how the Tin man felt which is not seen in the movie. Although it isn’t obvious that he is in love with Dorothy in the movie it is definitely possible and this explores the ideas of his feelings for her.
So Long is the heartfelt poem from Tin man to Dorothy on her leaving Oz. Much like Fire and Tears it explores the deeper relationship which the characters may have truly had. The medium of a poem was really clever and the use of onomatopoeia in it really connected well with writing it from the hollow noisy Tin man’s point of view.
Tick Tock is from Return to Oz and Keep Her Safe is his tale of how he feels in his roll to keep Dorothy safe at any cost. This fan fic personifies Tick Tock and his realization of his own human emotions and feelings. This is fully written and split up into syl-a-bles. This is how Tick Tock talks in the movie and really gives you a sense that you can hear him reading this fan fic out because of the style in which it is written in.

Another thing. There are a few plot spoilers for the stories I've chosen so please take that into account.
Set in a medieval, feudal era of Japan, we read the story through Takeo's eyes and are sent into a world of warlords and assassins. As Takeo mourns the loss of Otori Shigeru, he reflects on lessons learnt under Shigeru's guidance by taking on an artist's persona. He portrays beauty in the descriptions of his surroundings and ponders on the harsh reality of the life he was brought into. And yet, he learns a thing or two about his own strengths and downfalls.
2. 'What a Way to Spend a Vacation'. For anyone who has read 'Scarecrow' by Matthew Reilly, or are familiar with his fast, twisted action/thriller based plots, you may enjoy this story.
Shane Scholfield, call name 'Scarecrow', is a former member of the SAS. He once had a bounty on his head; $18.6 million in fact. Some of the worlds' important people want Scholfield dead, and fast. Bounty hunters employed by these superpowers take extreme measures to execute the deadly task. While previous attempts to eradicate him have failed, Scholfield goes on holiday; only to find himself in a spot of bother once again.
In the midst of it all, someone is always looking out for Scholfield...someone who just happens to be a bounty hunter himself.
Adapted from the anime 'The Cat Returns' 'Quintessential' is a one-shot fanfic about Haru and her drive to help out another for the greater good.

5. Fortesque's A Liar! 
Sir Daniel Fortesque is the lead character in the Playstation game ‘MediEvil’. The story acts as a prologue five years prior to when the actual game begins. Think of it like a retelling of history told in both first and third person perspectives. Sir Dan is found to be bending the truth about his success in battle, unbeknownst to a young, naïve Canny Tim who looks to Sir Dan as his idol. In retrospect, a sorcerer by the name of Zarok overhears Sir Dan’s tall tales and fumes at the thought. We are left knowing that Sir Dan may not have the last laugh in the ‘not so distant’ future.

NZ Connection
28 Weeks Later is a 2007 British post-apocalyptic science fiction film. Set on the island of Great Britan, just after the turn of the 21st century, the story depicts the breakdown of society following the accidental release of the highly contagious rage virus and focuses upon the struggle of four survivors to cope with the ruination of the life they once knew.
Six months after the rage virus was inflicted on the population of Great Britain, the US Army helps to secure a small area of London for survivors to repopulate and start again. But not everything goes to plan. During the outbreak of the rage virus in England, David (Robert Carlyle) and his wife, Alice (Catherine McCormick) hide in a country house with four other people. David has escaped the virus and managed to find his way back to his country of origin New Zealand. By this time the rage virus has disappeared. Swine flu is on the horizon and David is the only one concerned. This story takes place on David’s return to New Zealand.
England has been under quarantine for the past year with no new reported cases. Europe has not been affected as previously thought with many restrictions and services coming back to normal the opinion seems to be that the epidemic is something that will soon be behind us. Dr David Anderson previous head of the world health organization believes that what has transpired was a once in a thousand year event and the chance of history repeating itself very slim indeed.
Having re-located back to the city which he grew up in carefully crossing the road still jetlagged from his long flight back David is taken in by all the changes in the city. The city is almost unrecognizable in comparison to city he once as lived in as a student. The bars he once frequented now all gone. Passing the apartment he once resided bought back past memories that had long been dormant and in a moment of contemplation he thought. Change he pondered one of lifes timeless inevitability’s.
Feeling rather unsettled wandering down Queen St, David noticed a change in the behavior of those around him. Everyone seemed unusually agitated, seemingly unaware of his observations. Swine flu, the epidemic had just passed and everyone was going about their lives but blissfully unaware of what awaited them.
Residing in a central city high rise looking across the city David lays back in his chair stretching his arms back while rays of sun reflect through the window of his new office. Originally for at least the first part in his life, David having grown up in Auckland was familiar with the city although much had changed in the fifteen years or so since after graduation and having accepted a position within the world health organization he had resided in England for some time. Having settled down in his new office he shuffles through a folder while glancing at a picture of the small town outside London he used to reside in that is now no more due to the epidemic that had swept through the country.
A brief moment of reflection on what now seems like a different world a past life almost with only a picture to recollect memories that once were part of his everyday existence. Memories are all that we have left of the past and David been no different casually reflects on what once was while still feeling a slight uncertainty about the future. Having last week just arrived from England the process of settling into his new life and residence had been going smoothly while still being in contact and receiving regular updates of what in England had just transpired was startled by a someone laying in front of his path.
London always has people lying on the foot paths in various stages of intoxication and delusion. Had New Zealand changed that much in the last fifteen years he thought. Walking round the person would normally be the best course of action but this time not being in his nature he felt a concern for the person. Kneeling down “are you all right” he asked. No response. He took his hand and touched the shoulder of what appeared to be a middle aged woman her long hair almost covering her face. In an almost reflex like action the the woman outstretched her arm grasping on to David's hand pulling him closed towards her. Using his right hand trying to loosen her grip prying of each finger David managed to break free. Backing away still not having seen her face his hand aching and bruised David retreated into a coffee shop sat down noticing some blood on the underside of his palm. Seeing a small cut just above his wrist believing it not too be too serious he proceeded to clean his hand and wipe off the remaining blood. Something was very wrong and overcome with nausea David collapsed in the entrance of the shop the automatic door narrowly missing closing on his head. Unaware and unable to think he quivered shaking violently as if almost he was having a seizure. Seeing the situation unfolding a barista approached him with unease. “Are you alright” she asked while hesitating keeping her distance. Pausing momentarily slowing approaching him she glanced through the automatic door and to her horror she saw bodies strewn across the footpath. A mass panic slowly ensued.
It seems what had transpired in England was now repeating itself on the streets of Auckland. Now the future awaits........

David has escaped the virus and managed to find his way back to his country of origin New Zealand. By this time the rage virus has disappeared. Swine flu is on the horizon and David is the only one concerned. This story takes place on David’s return to New Zealand.
England has been under quarantine for the past year with no new reported cases. Europe has not been affected as previously thought with many restrictions and services coming back to normal the opinion seems to be that the epidemic is something that will soon be behind us. Dr David Anderson previous head of the world health organization believes that what has transpired was a once in a thousand year event and the chance of history repeating itself very slim indeed.
Having re-located back to the city which he grew up in carefully crossing the road still jetlagged from his long flight back David is taken in by all the changes in the city. The city is almost unrecognizable in comparison to city he once as lived in as a student. The bars he once frequented now all gone. Passing the apartment he once resided bought back past memories that had long been dormant and in a moment of contemplation he thought. Change he pondered one of lifes timeless inevitability’s.
Feeling rather unsettled wandering down Queen St, David noticed a change in the behavior of those around him. Everyone seemed unusually agitated, seemingly unaware of his observations. Swine flu, the epidemic had just passed and everyone was going about their lives but blissfully unaware of what awaited them.
Residing in a central city high rise looking across the city David lays back in his chair stretching his arms back while rays of sun reflect through the window of his new office. Originally for at least the first part in his life, David having grown up in Auckland was familiar with the city although much had changed in the fifteen years or so since after graduation and having accepted a position within the world health organization he had resided in England for some time. Having settled down in his new office he shuffles through a folder while glancing at a picture of the small town outside London he used to reside in that is now no more due to the epidemic that had swept through the country.
A brief moment of reflection on what now seems like a different world a past life almost with only a picture to recollect memories that once were part of his everyday existence. Memories are all that we have left of the past and David been no different casually reflects on what once was while still feeling a slight uncertainty about the future. Having last week just arrived from England the process of settling into his new life and residence had been going smoothly while still being in contact and receiving regular updates of what in England had just transpired was startled by a someone laying in front of his path.
London always has people lying on the foot paths in various stages of intoxication and delusion. Had New Zealand changed that much in the last fifteen years he thought. Walking round the person would normally be the best course of action but this time not being in his nature he felt a concern for the person. Kneeling down “are you all right” he asked. No response. He took his hand and touched the shoulder of what appeared to be a middle aged woman her long hair almost covering her face. In an almost reflex like action the the woman outstretched her arm grasping on to David's hand pulling him closed towards her. Using his right hand trying to loosen her grip prying of each finger David managed to break free. Backing away still not having seen her face his hand aching and bruised David retreated into a coffee shop sat down noticing some blood on the underside of his palm. Seeing a small cut just above his wrist believing it not too be too serious he proceeded to clean his hand and wipe off the remaining blood. Something was very wrong and overcome with nausea David collapsed in the entrance of the shop the automatic door narrowly missing closing on his head. Unaware and unable to think he quivered shaking violently as if almost he was having a seizure. Seeing the situation unfolding a barista approached him with unease. “Are you alright” she asked while hesitating keeping her distance. Pausing momentarily slowing approaching him she glanced through the automatic door and to her horror she saw bodies strewn across the footpath. A mass panic slowly ensued.
It seems what had transpired in England was now repeating itself on the streets of Auckland. Now the future awaits........
